TWELVE

Wade was in his office when he heard a woman yelling his name from the bar. They weren’t opened yet, and he had no idea what this could be about. He looked at the camera and there was a woman waving a bat around, demanding that he come out. Wade walked into the main room. “It’s okay guys. I’ll handle this.” He turned to the woman. “Can I help you ma'am?”

“Are you a fucking psychopath?” the woman asked.

“No.” He replied calmly. “You’re the one who came into my establishment wielding a bat. Who are you? And what do you want?”

“I’m a friend of Simone’s.”

“I see.” Wade’s heart leapt at the mention of Simone’s name. “Would you like to step into my office?” he asked.

“We can settle this right here, motherfucker.”

“I’m sure Simone would appreciate some discretion.”

“Sure,” she said.

“What’s your name?” he asked as they entered his office.

“Jasmine.”

“Nice to meet you, Jasmine. I’m Wade.”

“I know who you are,” Jasmine said.

“Okay.” Wade held up his hands. “How is Simone?” he asked.

“How do you think she is? I’m here with a bat, ready to knock you into next week, asshole. What did you do? My best friend is at home crying. She hasn’t left the house in a week, which is something I can understand, if she was nineteen, but she’s a grown ass woman. She doesn’t behave like this. What did you do to her?”

Wade opened his mouth.

“You know what? I don’t care what you did. All I care about is that you fix it. Fix it right now.” Jasmine banged the bat against his desk.

“There’s nothing I can do.”

“Let me ask you something. Did you tell this woman you don’t know you love her?”

Wade didn’t reply.

“What kind narcissistic asshole does something like that?”

“I respect that you’re Simone’s friend, and I’m glad you’re looking out for her, but what Simone and I shared is between us.”

“It’s about to be between you and this bat. Why does my best friend care that you left her? Why has she been crying for a week? Why the fuck is she convinced that you’re in love with her? None of this makes sense.” Jasmine held her bat in swinging position.

“Put the bat down,” Wade said. “I can’t discuss that with you. Simone knows what we had. That’s all I’m going to say.”

“I’m going to put this bat up your ass if you don’t tell me what’s going on.”

“I will tell you this. I care very deeply for Simone, and I wouldn’t do anything to hurt her. We shared a very special night, but it was one night only. We both knew that.”

“Well somehow your wires got crossed. I don’t care what it takes, but you’d better make my friend stop crying today. Right now. She’s stuck in whatever happened between you. You need to tell her you’re sorry. You tell her it’s over, and you tell her to her face, or I’m going to bust up this whole building with my bat. I think she just needs closure, and if you can be decent and do that you won’t have to worry about me anymore.
